Description

The Volcano Bungalow is an historic caretaker’s cottage, built in the 1930s and thoroughly renovated in early 2007. It preserves the “old” cottage feeling, while offering the conveniences of the twenty-first century.

The newly renovated and fully equipped kitchen has a 20” electric range,  a 10-cubic-foot refrigerator,  with microwave, toaster, and coffee maker atop the large wrap-around oak countertop and new, custom-built lower cabinets, and, in the 1930s-built pantry, a coffee press, blender, and rice cooker. The bathroom, also fully renovated, has a generously sized, ceramic-tiled shower. The living room is warmed by a Jøtul gas stove and has an entertainment cabinet with a TV on cable, a DVD player, with a collection of movies, and a music player with an eclectic collection of CDs, including Hawaiian music.  There’s also wired and wireless high-speed internet access and a private phone line, with two cordless handsets. There is a queen-sized bed in each of the two bedrooms and a queen-sized futon/couch in the living room. A home-away-from-home, like our other cottages, the Bungalow provides private, quiet comfort.

Besides the covered front porch, which has a built-in bench (for removing shoes, local-style), it offers a spacious covered back lanai, with built-in benches and a hand-built table, surrounded by camellia trees (they grow big here!). Charming and comfortable, the Bungalow offers easy access to the village’s stores and restaurants from an unpaved one-lane road, used only by residents and their guests.
